HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019

2019 has arrived, the days are getting longer and spring is not too far off the horizon. Our new year’s resolution is to make 2019 as memorable as possible for everyone who joins us. To start it off, we’d love to share five of our ‘must do’ west coast adventures. How many can you tackle this year?

DRINK A HOT CHOCOLATE ON A HIGHLAND BEACH

Canoe to a beach, light a fire in our Kelly Kettle, drink. Choose from coffee, tea or our famous hot chocolate with options of whipped cream, marshmallows and a stunning view. We think it’s pretty great and the proof is in the pudding.

 CANOE TO A MOUNTAIN {and climb it}

Experience rewarding views from a north west mountain from a unique approach. Venturing through the lochs by canoe turns those long walks into an enjoyable journey. Our local favourites to access by canoe are Suilven, Beinn an Eoin and Cul Mor. We work in partnership with our sister company Hamlet Mountaineering.

If you have an idea for your own paddle-peak adventure further afield we’d love to help make it happen!

KAYAK THROUGH AN ARCH

The Summer Isles are dotted with dozens of fantastic natural archways. Carved by wind and waves, the Torridonian Sandstone rock forms these artistic sculptures which are irresistible to any kayaker. Many of them we can paddle all the way through on calm days. There are equally as many deep caves and crevices to sneak inside too, so don’t forget a head torch!

WILD CAMP ON AN ISLAND

There are many islands in the Summer Isles to explore. Each with their own character, they make for wonderful wild campsites too. We use the term ‘wild camp’ because we are remote but by no means do we sacrifice comfort. We use premium Hilleberg tents and provide freshly cooked three course dinners with a glass of wine. On nicer evenings, the chance for a post-dinner sunset paddle makes for a memorable experience. The next day we start with a fresh coffee over breakfast so we have plenty of energy to explore in style.

GET TO KNOW THE LOCAL WILDLIFE

The Summer isles are part of the Wester Ross marine protected area and have an abundance of wildlife. One of the greatest things about kayaks and canoes is our chance to become part of the sea and travel amongst them. Our guides love teaching about the local flora and fauna; from the macro to the micro organisms, there is plenty to discover. At low tide we can explore the intertidal habitats of the Laminarial seaweed by looking for urchins and starfish. We take careful consideration to keep a respectful distance from the animals we encounter so as not to disturb them during breeding season. Letting nature come to us instead, thankfully they aren’t too shy.

Keep an eye out for seals, eagles, porpoise and even the elusive otter.

Whatever your 2019 brings to you, we at Kayak Summer Isles hope it’s a wonderful year filled with many happy and memorable experiences. Bring on 2019!
