It’s that lawless few days between Christmas and New Year again, no one really knows what day it is, life is fuelled on ‘leftovers’ sandwiches and time has wonderfully slowed down. Packing our left over dinners we figured we could stretch a three day adventure on what we had remaining, what better trip than a classic journey to ascend Suilven via the lochs.

So there we were on Badentarbat Beach, Achiltibuie, 6 novice kayakers keen to get paddling. Our guide, Will from Kayak Summer Isles was there with shiny new kayaks and soon got us all geared up. We carried the kayaks down on to the shoreline through a gap in the seaweed Will had thoughtfully cleared for us and headed out on a mirror calm sea.

The Summer isles are a scattered archipelago of islands close to the west highland community of Achiltiebuie. With rugged sandstone cliffs lined with arches and caves and remote sandy beaches they are a paradise for paddlers. From rugged rocky stacks to the inhabited Tanera Mor, each island holds its own character and are well worth exploring. Here are a few relatively accessible options for a Summer Isle adventure.
