Frequently Asked Questions

We are always happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about our trips. Below we have compiled a list of our most common queries, which may help answer your questions. For anything else, please email us on info@kayaksummerisles.com and we’ll get back to you with an answer as soon as we can.

How do I get to you?

Our directions page will help you reach us.

What happens if it rains?

We do not cancel our trips for rain, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, literally. On our trips we provide you with top quality equipment to keep you warm and dry when on the water. Once in the kayaks/canoes, the dancing rain brings certain magic to the water, and makes for the best chances of rainbows.

We do cancel for Thunderstorms – in which case we will be in touch and discuss our options to postpone or in the worst case, refund your trip.

What happens if it is too windy?

Our guides will make the decision to the venue we use based on the strength and direction of the wind. We will be in touch within 24 hours of our trip departure to re-confirm our meeting point to make best sense of the weather. If the wind is too strong to safely make any option viable, we reserve the right to curtail our adventure for safety. If this happens we offer a full refund of your trip cost. Thankfully, this is relatively rare.

Can I rent a kayak/canoe without a guide?

We do not currently offer private rental. We would recommend our local friends at WhatSUP Ullapool, who  have some kayak rental options and great Stand Up Paddle Board rentals.

Do I need to be experienced?

We welcome all abilities. The vast majority of our guests have little to no prior paddling experience. We will tailor our trips to suit your ability and ambitions.  As part of the day our guides will equip you with lots of top tips and handy hints to become confident and capable in your kayak/canoe. Please tick the appropriate box in your booking regarding experience form to help us tailor the day to best suit you.

Do you provide double kayaks or single?

All of our sea kayaks are single person kayaks.
Our canoes are tandem.

Will I capsize?

Our chosen models of kayaks are stable and comfortable to control. Our guides give excellent instruction on how to keep upright and well balanced. This reflects on our average seasonal capsize rate, which currently stands at less than 5%.
If you do capsize, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered, with excellent equipment that will keep you warm, even when wet, and our guide will quickly get you back in your boat to continue your adventure with confidence.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

No, but we do ask that you can swim. If you don’t swim, we do have options which we would be delighted to discuss, please contact us on info@kayaksummerisles.com. As part of our trip, we provide you with a buoyancy aid, which is worn at all times on the water, this will keep you afloat if you do decide to go for an unscheduled swim.

Do you take dogs?

We cannot take dogs in our sea kayaks, but we can take dogs in our canoes. If you are planning on taking a dog with you, we would ask you to discuss this before booking with us. Owners must be able to control their dog around sheep and deer, which are often present on the hills during our canoe trips.
Alternately, Ullapool has a dog daycare centre who can be reached on 07788 425077. Or via their facebook page.
