What to Expect

A True Canoe classic and a unique way to tackle one of Scotland’s finest summits. Rising 731m (2398ft) Suilven’s iconic domed summit and rugged ridge-line dominates the Inverpollaidh landscape. Stretching to the foot of the peak are the remote and spectacular waters of Loch Veyatie and Fionn Loch, which can be canoes across from the small hamlet of Elphin.

Our journey begins by meeting at the Elphin tea-rooms, where a short portage to the foot of the loch begins along a farm track. We will load our canoes with our camp equipment and food at the shore before setting off into the lochs. Looking ahead to the west we can already see Suilven’s iconic ridge and to our south is the equally impressive slopes of Cul Mor. If we are lucky we may be able to set a sail, otherwise it is a delightful paddle.

When we reach the end of Loch Veyatie a short river connects us to Fionn Loch. Depending on water levels we will either paddle or line our canoes downstream. At the foot of the river are a couple of spectacular wild campsites.

Should the weather allow from here we can climb the southern route up Suilven, a steep slope with a small path. In areas there may be loose rock underfoot and a moderate sense of exposure, but a safe and achievable route to most hikers. Once atop the col we join the main trail to the summit and enjoy looking down at our camp far below. If the weather does not allow us to safely venture to the mountain an alternative walk to the spectacular Kirkaig falls is a good option for us too.

At camp we will cook a three course dinner and serve with drinks. Don’t worry if it’s raining as we have a fantastic yurt tent to hide away from the elements (and midges), if it’s sunny we’ll sit out on the lochside and enjoy the evening light over the mountains. At Kayak Summer Isles we pride ourselves in following a leave-no-trace policy, packing out our waste as we leave.

The following day (3 day) or later in the afternoon (2 day) we will return back to Elphin along the lochs, this time enjoying our view east as we head home.
