What to Expect

Rugged coastline, caves and archways and sandy beaches. The Summer Isles is a sea kayak classic with so much to explore, an overnight trip is without doubt the finest way to experience these spectacular islands. Open to all abilities, from beginner to expert we will try and match you with paddlers of a similar level during your trip, which we can then take as leisurely or experiential as you’d like to go. We’ll meet at a pre-arranged location close to the islands for 10am where we will pack our kayaks before heading off to explore. A full list of what we provide and what to bring can be found here. Our exact route will be determined by the weather and our ambition as a group, we like to think of our options as multiple ‘Plan A’s’. Our day will be spent exploring the coast where we will expect to find caves and archways and some remote beaches. The islands are abundant with wildlife ranging from seals and seabirds to otters, sea eagles, porpoise and even dolphin.

The archipelago has many exceptional wilderness camp sites to choose from, which we will pick to suit the weather. Between the many options, at Kayak Summer Isles we pride ourselves on using a rotational policy with wild camp spots, ensuring minimal repeat disturbance over our seasons use, we also adhere to a leave no trace, pack in-pack out policy. At camp we will cook a three course dinner and serve with drinks. Don’t worry if it’s raining as we have a fantastic yurt tent to hide away from the elements, if it’s sunny we’ll sit out on the rocks and enjoy the evening light.

One of the finest luxuries of an overnight trip is to take the opportunity of a sunset paddle. The red rocks of the billion year old Torridonian sandstone truly come alive as the sun heads toward the horizon. If the weather allows this is one of the most special experiences we offer.

If the weather is not appropriate to explore the islands we may venture a short way further north or south to make the most of more sheltered venues. As always we will of course be in touch prior to your trip if this may be the case.
